What to expect from our work together

It’s normal to feel a little nervous about meeting a professional. Here’s some information that might put your mind at ease.

What happens in the first meeting?

This is called an assessment. If you're an adult coming alone, I will meet with you do discuss your needs and how best to support you. If you’re a young person, I usually meet with both parents and you where possible. If this is not possible, I try to meet with at least one parent or guardian and the young person. This is to briefly discuss what’s going on for you. It’s usually about an hour max.

Can I talk to you alone?

Yes! My sessions are one to one, meaning we will have lots of time to get to know each other. Sessions are also confidential. Unless, I’m very worried about you, I won’t share any information with your parents or a third party.

What type of things will we talk about?

That’s up to you! Usually, we will discuss what’s going on for you and figure out ways to help you manage better. Lots of people come to talk to me about lots of different things. Most common reasons are anxiety, low mood, things going on at home, difficulty with attending school or university etc. I will do my best to support you through it .

What help will you give my parents?

I will work with your parents to help them to support you! This might mean things like helping them to communicate better with you or helping them to understand you more. Our one to one sessions are private. I won’t share our sessions with your parents, unless you tell me something that worries me. I go through all of this in our first meeting.
